A properly sized solar panel and battery can handle 20 to 30 cycles per day with ease, which is well above what most households need.

Full or mostly-full sun exposure at the gate location. We’re not a solar-only company, and we’re straightforward when hardwired power is the smarter investment. There are properties where solar will underperform, and pushing it anyway just leads to a frustrated homeowner and a service call six months later.

Heavy shade at the gate. If your gate sits under a canopy of mature oaks, dense pines, or on a north-facing slope that gets limited direct sunlight, the panel won’t produce enough charge to keep up. A solar panel that’s shaded for half the day might deliver only 10–20% of its rated output. In wooded areas of Nevada County, North Auburn, Colfax, Camino, and Pollock Pines, we often see tree cover that makes solar impractical without significant trimming.

High-frequency commercial usage. Business entrances, multi-unit residential complexes, busy ranch or farm access points — anywhere the gate is opening dozens of times per hour — will drain the battery faster than solar can replenish it. These properties need a dedicated electrical circuit with consistent, high-output power.

Sacramento’s winter fog season. This is the one that catches people off guard. The Sacramento Valley can get extended stretches of dense fog from November through February that dramatically reduce solar panel output. Combined with shorter daylight hours and colder temperatures that slow battery charging chemistry, winter is the season where solar systems are most likely to fall short. Short distance from the house to the gate. If your gate is within 30–50 feet of the electrical panel and the trenching route is straightforward, the cost difference between solar and hardwired may be minimal. In that scenario, hardwired gives you unlimited power capacity with zero dependence on weather conditions.

The Real Cost Comparison

Homeowners often ask us for a straight cost comparison, so here’s what we typically see across our Sacramento-area installations.

A solar setup adds the cost of the panel, mounting hardware, and a solar-compatible battery to the operator price. But it eliminates the electrician, trenching, conduit, wire, and electrical permits. For properties where the gate is more than about 50–75 feet from the house, the solar path almost always comes out $1,500 to $3,000 cheaper overall — and installation is faster because there’s no waiting on an electrical subcontractor.

On the other hand, hardwired installations cost more upfront but deliver unlimited, weather-independent power. For high-traffic properties or locations with heavy shade, the added investment pays for itself in avoided service calls and battery replacements down the road.

Permitting Considerations in Sacramento County
